Lead abatement activities often begin with collecting samples from possible sources of lead contamination. After these samples are collected, they undergo tests and analysis to confirm the presence and levels of lead in the location.

Ground soil can be a lead land mine without facility managers and building occupants knowing it. When the ground is opened up for whatever reason, say, for a new construction project, or a landscaping activity, or from a break or crack in the ground due to heavy load and traffic, the ground soil may release long-embedded lead into the air. When lead has been released from the soil, it will eventually find its way into footwear and clothing and result to lead contamination.

One of the sampling methods that lead abatement workers can use to determine the presence and amount of lead is the collection of dust wipe samples. This is a simple method that makes it possible to measure the amount of lead in surfaces by merely quantifying the lead amounts in dust particles. After a lead abatement activity, dust wipe sampling can also confirm whether or not the cleanup was successful and traces of lead have been removed from the surface.

Any paint with lead levels of 1 milligram and above per square centimeter is considered by the EPA as a lead-based paint. It automatically falls into the EPA's Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) program and lead abatement activities should commence.

Indoor Environmental Quality or IEQ is one of the standards for green building compliance to the LEED rating system. IEQ considers the environmental impact of any methods, materials or features used in the construction and maintenance of the building in relation to the physical and psychological welfare of building occupants. IEQ has been well-documented in various studies to affect employee performance, student productivity, and tenant health.
Here are some of the ways to achieve IEQ in a sustainable facility:

To be considered a green facility, it should possess features that promote sustainability. This can be in the form of procedures and practices to conserve and reduce water use, lessen the building's dependence on greenhouse gas-emitting electricity, and adopt renewable sources of energy. Another important feature of a sustainable facility is that it uses green materials in its construction and maintenance, such as low- to zero-VOC green coatings.

One of the key factors that make a sustainable facility is the innovative way that it reduces its energy consumption and adopts alternative sources of energy. An ordinary building often sources its supply of electricity from the power grid, which traditionally uses coal-fired power generation. When coal is burned, greenhouse gasses are emitted to the atmosphere.

The building industry is gaining in-roads in achieving sustainability from initial building construction projects, to green coatings and materials used, to building operations and management. But there is more work ahead and the key to success is to keep at it one building at a time.
What is intrinsic to a sustainable facility? The definition lies in several key pillars promoted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These are:

Resin modifiers have gained wide acceptance as a unique form of commercial building waterproofing sealant. Advances in adhesion technology have produced phenolic resins through the synthesis of polymers at the molecular level. These resins belong to a group of low-cost adhesives -- the lowest in the industry. Phenolic resins come in one- or two-part liquid, emulsion or powder, and can be used as a base or modifier resin in an adhesive formulation. Often it is exposed to another element to induce a reaction that produces adhesion.

Many commercial building waterproofing projects make use of urethane-based sealants to achieve cost benefits and high performance at the same time. Urethane-based sealing formulations are a less expensive option compared to silicone-based sealing products, without compromising the quality of the commercial building waterproofing system.
