New Maintenance Needs Spur a Hybrid of Industrial and Architectural Coatings

High performance industrial coatings are used to protect large scale infrastructure. These include corrosion resistant coatings and concrete coatings, amongst others. They protect bridges and industrial floors from corrosion, abrasion and chemicals.

Green: The New Color for the Painting Industry

The environmental impact of the coatings used by the commercial coatings industry is an ongoing discussion (sometimes cooperative and sometimes not) with the environmental community. Ever tighter environmental regulations are being put in place, seemingly every year. One tool in the race to reduce environmental impact of unused paints is to increase the amounts that are recycled.

Going Green with Painting and Coatings

The search intended for improved methods to use green products, techniques plus technology brings building managers to coating techniques that not only consider the welfare of the ecosystem and incurs less significant expenses, but simultaneously still maintain top quality paint performance. A number of of these paints plus coatings practices are the application of another coating that not just necessitates little surface preparation, but ensures longer years toward the building plus stronger protection against daily wear-and-tear.

Green Raw Materials - Going Green

Raw material suppliers have been busy researching and formulating green materials. A new line of emulsion polymers, for instance, help paint manufacturers develop low-VOC and low-odor paints without the aid of detrimental coalescents.

Resin Innovations for Greener Alkyds

Green painting applications go beyond the actual coating and are also concerned with the raw materials involved in the manufacture of the coatings formulation. In the case of alkyd-based paints, manufacturers conduct in-depth research and development of the raw materials that make up the alkyd-based paint, and do some enhancements and modifications to turn oil-based alkyds into green painting-compliant water-based formulations.

Greener Alkyds in Water-Oil Hybrid Formulations

Aiming to tear alkyd-based paints away from their dependency on harmful solvents, many paint manufacturers are designing green painting alkyds that are a variation of the oil-based alkyd paints. Oil-based formulations require the aid of harmful solvents and chemicals to make the application process successful.

Zero-VOC Alkyds

Because paints that are based on alkyd resins perform well and look good on surfaces, many paint manufacturers chose to improve their alkyd-based products for higher marketability. One downside often associated with alkyd coatings, however, is that they cannot be used in green painting applications because of their use of harmful solvents. Green painting practices require paints that are not harmful to the environment and release as little volatile organic compounds (VOC) as possible.

Green Painting with Alkyd-based Paints

Alkyd resin-based paints used to be popular in construction projects of decades past. Alkyd-based formulations possess unique application benefits and performance gains that were quite valued by painting contractors.
